The 2 - 10 keV emission properties of PSR B 1937 + 21

چکیده
We present the results of a BeppoSAX observation of the fastest pulsar known: PSR B1937+21. The ∼ 200 ks observation (78.5 (34) ks MECS (LECS) exposure times) allowed us to investigate with high statistical significance both the spectral properties and the pulse profile shape. The absorbed power law spectral model gave a photon index of ∼ 1.7 and N H ∼ 2.3 × 10 22 cm −2. These values explain both a. the ROSAT non-detection and b. the deviant estimate of a photon index of ∼ 0.8 obtained by ASCA. The pulse profile appears, for the first time, clearly double peaked with the main component much stronger than the other. The statistical significance is 10σ (main peak) and 5σ (secondary peak). The 1.6–10 keV pulsed fraction is consistent with 100%; only in the 1.6–4 keV band there is a ∼ 2σ indication for a DC component.

The single-pulse properties of the millisecond radio pulsar PSR B1937+21 are studied in the 1410 MHz radio band. Aside from occasional “giant pulses” occurring in restricted regions of pulse phase, the emission appears to be remarkably stable, showing no pulse-to-pulse fluctuations other then those induced by propagation through the interstellar medium. This type of behavior has not been seen i...

متن کاملChandra and Rxte Studies of the X-ray/γ-ray Millisecond Pulsar Psr J0218+4232
We report on high-resolution spatial and timing observations of the millisecond pulsar PSR J0218+4232 performed with the Chandra X-ray Observatory (CXO) and the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). With these observations we were able to study a) the possible spatial extent at X-ray energies of the DC source coincident with PSR J0218+4232 in detail (CXO), b) the relative phasing between the X-ra...
متن کاملX - Ray Emission from Psr B 1800 - 21 , Its Wind Nebula , and Similar Systems
We detected X-ray emission from the Vela-like pulsar B1800−21 and resolved its synchrotron nebula with the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The pulsar’s flux is Fpsr = (1.4±0.2)×10−14 ergs cm−2 s−1 in the 1–6 keV band. Its spectrum can be described by a two-component power law (PL) + blackbody model, suggesting a mixture of thermal and magnetospheric emission. For a plausible hydrogen column density ...

We present Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) hard X-ray timing and spectroscopy of the three exceptionally energetic rotation-powered millisecond pulsars PSRs B1821−24, B1937+21, and J0218+4232. By correcting the NuSTAR on-board clock for phase and frequency drifts between observation intervals, we are able to recover the intrinsic hard X-ray pulse profiles of all three pulsars wit...
